6 Books Not About Women Being Wives or Mothers
In honor of Women's History Month, and every month
Dean and I walked to our neighborhood coffee shop on Saturday morning to get coffee. We took it to go and walked home along the cove trail since it was a warm and sunny morning. As we walked, we chatted about what we were reading, and I shared that I was reading this book, which reminded me of a few other favorites of mine. This veered into discussing what we liked about our favorite books and why. What threads connect them together?
One of the benefits of regularly reflecting on my reading life is that I have made connections between books to understand more about my reading taste. One of the specific genres of books I love is a well-written historical fiction novel featuring an independent woman who is not defined solely by her relationship with others. So, in other words, it's not solely a story about her being a wife or a mother.Â
They are stories about women who pursue their ambitions wholeheartedly and follow their whims. They are headstrong women who are passionate and willing to make sacrifices to follow their passions. They know what they want and aren't afraid to shirk societal norms to pursue it.Â
I am a wife, and I am grateful that it looks very different (for me) than it has for many women in generations before me. I love Dean, and we actively work to create an equal partnership in our household, as I know many other modern couples do. I don't believe "wife" should be the first qualifier someone uses when describing themselves.Â
