It's been three years since I last experienced a first day of school. Before I went full-time with my photography business, I worked for several years in higher education. So, despite not having a first day as a student since 2014 (when I started graduate school), I still got to experience them as a staff member.
This year, the nostalgia is hitting hard. I think any book lover feels nostalgic this time of year. In the infamous words of Joe Fox: "Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address."
This weekend, during a low-key weekend, we watched Dead Poets Society. Which led us to watch Good Will Hunting the next night. Robin Williams (RIP) as a teacher and professor made me long for the days of being in school. Learning, expanding, growing.
As adults, we can still learn if we pursue it, but we don't get the same transformational education that the time in school allows. As I went on my daily walk around the cove this morning, with the yellow school buses ferrying kids to school, I thought about how to bring more learning into my life this fall.
During my time working at Columbia, the Dean often talked about cultivating a Beginner's Mind mindset at convocation when welcoming the newest class. It's something I was grateful to be reminded of often, ensuring that one is never too old to learn new things, see things in a new light, or change your mind.
Of course, books are great for that. I read a lot of fiction and some non-fiction that leans mostly towards self-help. This season, I want fewer inputs in all areas of my life. I thought about how good it would feel to replace my consumption (of entertainment, mostly) with more learning. So, I'm leaning into my curiosity this fall and excited to see where it takes me. I want to grow, learn, and be inspired. In whatever areas catch my interest.
If you feel the same, here is a smattering of non-fiction titles I've read over the last few years that changed my mind, actions, or outlook.
