We share all of these Substack favorites, Michelle! A few more great ones are A Strong Sense of Place (feeds the travel urge too!) and Romancing the Phone which so eloquently discusses the romance genre.

Okay, I just heard about Romancing the Phone this morning when I listened to her on the Culture Study Podcast. An immediate follow! So good.

What an honor, thank you! Like Katy said, we share a lot of favorites! It’s such a great community here, which is extra helpful after the week we’ve had. Thanks for including me and for creating this lovely list! 🤍

Also — I’d already subscribed to all these fellow Substack writers but all but one of the Instagram accounts were new to me, so I followed them all. Thanks for brightening up my feed!

Oh excited to dive into some new sources here thank you for curated.

I’m gonna toot my own horn here because I love and am proud of my own book rec newsletter! Each week I send out three titles around a theme like: villains, toil and trouble, jane, cassandra, dark academia, fuck the patriarchy etc.

Just added new book stacks to read thanks to this! I'm enjoying so many of the book conversations. One of my on repeat book tubers is Kayla's Bookish Vibes. It's one of my favorite things to listen to while in the kitchen.

I'm off to check out her channel, thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for the shout-out! I spotted a lot of my favorites on your list too. So glad for this space where we can thoughtfully and expansively talk about the reading life!

Book-people are the best people everywhere but Substack is unique in how well suited it is for meaningful book conversations. The combo of long-form and discoverability is magic.

You have listed so many of my favorites and so excited to dig into some new friends (because I know they will be friends).

Two more from me, that consistently give me book recommendations that really fit my taste are Kate Jones and Nic Marna - reflective, emotional, and challenging literary fiction.

Yes, I’ve so loved the long form, nuanced conversation that happens over here. It’s been such a balm for me.

Thank you for these recs! Do you watch any bookish youtube channels?

Expand full comment

Not regularly! The one that I watch from time to time is The Book Leo. Do you have? I’d love to hear if you have favs ◡̈

I don’t have, unfortunately, I can’t find one who will have a similar book taste, so I only watch some of the content, not following everything. Jack Edwards(Jack in the Books) has interesting videos, he is very into book awards etc, but sometimes it’s getting too serious for my taste. On the other hand, I like Lottie Smalley but most of her content is on the lighter side. I need a mix of both!

This is so helpful for someone like me who is new on the platform. Thank you very much! 📚

You’re welcome! (Though you may not be thanking me as much when your ‘books to read’ pile is mountainous because of all the recs 😂)

This was so helpful — I’ve been searching for more Bookstagram/Substack book account recs! Thoughtfully curated and fun 🫶🏻

Katy, yes! I miss booksta friends but I’m glad I can check in here and there (and just patiently wait for them to make the jump to Substack ◡̈ )

So many of my favorites too!! I also love Alexis of Feeling My Shelf, I just picked up a Christmas romance I hadn't heard of yet thanks to her. 😄 https://www.feelingmyshelfnewsletter.com/p/chapter-55-banned-and-challenged

Yes! Love Alexis’ newsletter too. Such a good one.

Have you come across Daisy Buchanan's 'You're Booked' podcast? She interviews authors about the books that have been formative or significant for them, so you get many, many titles from each episode - I got about a quarter of what I read for a year from there, as I went through the back catalogue.

Expand full comment

Yes! I got really into listening to it during the pandemic but fell off in 2022. I know she isn’t publishing as regularly now but this is a great reminder to revisit old episodes. I, too, have found some really great recs from her. Thanks for the reminder!
